Trembling aspen

Description

Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a deciduous hardwood species found throughout British Columbia east of the Coast Mountain ranges. It grows best on moist, well-drained soils and has smooth greenish-white bark that does not peel. Individual aspen stems are relatively short-lived and often succumb to disease at 50 years of age or so. Trembling aspen is known for its ability to sprout from root suckers and form clones of many individual stems. These clones can get quite large and can be very long-lived with some estimated to be over 5,000 years old.
